How to Choose the Perfect Newborn Outfit for a Photo Session

How to Choose the Perfect Newborn Outfit for a Photo Session

If you're a beginner newborn photographer or a mom preparing for your baby’s first photo shoot, choosing the right outfit is one of the most exciting — and important — parts of planning the session. The outfit you choose won’t just dress your baby; it will help shape the entire aesthetic and emotional feel of the photos.

Here’s a simple guide to help you make the best choice — one that reflects your style and creates beautiful memories.

1. Start With the Style of the Photo Shoot

Before you even think about fabrics or colors, ask yourself:
What do I want this session to feel like?

Would you like something:

  • Rustic or Boho, with earth tones, textured fabrics and vintage vibes?

  • Elegant, Classic, or Minimalist, with neutral palettes and timeless shapes?

  • Luxurious or Statement-making, with delicate lace, layers, or bold touches?

Knowing your preferred style helps narrow down your choices and gives your photos a cohesive, meaningful feel. This is especially useful if you’re a photographer building a portfolio, or a parent who wants to frame the photos in your home.

2. Choose a Color Palette That Complements Your Vision

Once you know your desired style, the next step is to decide on a color palette. Neutrals like cream, ivory, beige, dusty rose, or warm gray are always a safe and beautiful choice. Earthy tones (mustard, sage, rust) are wonderful for rustic or boho sessions. Soft pastels feel dreamy and delicate.

Here are some helpful questions:

  • Do you plan to print and hang these photos in your home? Pick colors that match your home’s decor.

  • Do you want the session to coordinate with past shoots (wedding photos, sibling portraits)? Use similar tones.

  • Do you simply have a favorite color that feels meaningful to you? Go for it!

  • Are you inspired by seasonal trends or Pinterest boards? Let those guide your palette.

3. Focus on the Fit – Newborn Outfits Are Not One-Size-Fits-All

Newborn photo outfits are made especially to fit babies from 0 to 14 days old. Unlike regular baby clothes, they’re designed to sit snugly, pose well, and stay in place without extra bunching or gaping.

In my shop, every outfit is made using my own custom patterns, developed and tested over 13+ years. The result: a perfect fit that works beautifully in photos and keeps baby comfortable throughout the shoot.

4. Consider the Fabric – Soft, Stretchy, Photogenic

Softness is essential. Your baby will often be undressed or gently posed, so the fabric touching their skin should be:

  • Soft and comfortable (jersey fabric, stretchy lace, angora, cotton, muslin)

  • Stretchy enough to go on easily without disturbing the baby

  • Matte or textured — to photograph well without glare

Bonus tip: Fabrics with subtle visual texture add depth and character to your photos.

5. Think About the Full Look – Sets or Accessories

Some parents or photographers prefer to mix and match, but many find it easiest to choose a coordinated set (romper + wrap + pillow; romper + headband; pants + hats)
This ensures:

  • A polished look

  • Easy styling on the day of the shoot

  • A time-saving, stress-free experience

Make sure not to over-style. The baby is always the star.

The outfit you choose can e turn those moments into timeless keepsakes. Start with the story you want to tell, then build the colors and textures around it.
